In early 2017, the Mayor and the Village Board of Trustees of the Village of Airmont formed a Steering Committee to update its Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code for the first time in six years – the original Plan was adopted in September 2011. The Comprehensive Plan is a document which guides growth in the Village by establishing how land should be used throughout the Village, what building sizes and densities are appropriate, what roadway improvements should be made, what community facilities are required, and providing a framework for other matters of public policy. The Comprehensive Plan, which is the basis for the Village’s land use regulations, is an important tool in ensuring that future development in the Village occurs in an orderly and beneficial manner. An up-to-date Comprehensive Plan is also vital to securing public grants from State and Federal Sources, and attracting private investment.
The Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee recently began the process of preparing an update to the Plan. Nelson, Pope & Voorhis, LLC, a Hudson Valley planning firm and the Village Planner serving the Planning Board, was selected to assist the committee in February 2017 and a kickoff meeting was held in March of 2017. Since then, the Committee has met twice monthly to review existing conditions including zoning, demographics, environmental constraints, transportation, traffic, and other matters relating to land use in the Village.
The next step in the process and perhaps the most vital will be to gather public input regarding the Village and opinions concerning future growth and development. To accomplish this, the Steering Committee wishes to engage a diverse segment of the Village’s population, businesses, institutions and other stakeholders.
The Village of Airmont Comprehensive Plan Steering Committee will hold its first of a series of public meetings to gather input on a plan for the Village’s future. The first meeting is intended to gather public input, opinion, sentiment, and feedback regarding the current state of the Village and impending opportunities and challenges that the Village is facing. Additionally, the Steering Committee will engage the public on community needs and ideas for transforming the Village parallel to a “Vision Statement” developed by the Committee to guide the Comprehensive Plan update process. This information will be used to further refine the goals and objectives which form the basis for the Plan.
The Steering Committee invites Village residents, land owners, business owners and other stakeholders to attend the upcoming Public Open House Workshop from 7:00 – 10:00pm on Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at the Town of Ramapo Challenger Learning Center located at 225 Route 59, Airmont, New York. All are welcome and encouraged to attend and contribute. Refreshments will be served.
